Born into an extensive dynasty of interpreters in Pera, during his years as an apprentice interpreter he was involved in the assassination of the Portuguese spy Don Juan de Menesses, alongside the resident envoy Alexander Greiffenklau. His conflict with the Ottoman authorities led to his dismissal from the service.
